VIRTUAL OPEN STUDIO

Grab your lab coats and safety glasses, because for her Virtual Open Studios presentation, Felicity will be introducing you to the colourful world of anodised jewellery!

Anodising is the process of colouring certain metals through the application of an electric current. Pieces of niobium or titanium are cut out, resurfaced, then submerged in a beaker of solution, with a current passing through it. In a matter of seconds, the metal emerges brightly coloured- just like a magic trick!

The demonstration will include masking and engraving techniques which are used to apply multiple colours and patterns to a single piece. She will also touch on the limitations of working in these unusual metals, and how this often leads to interesting design solutions.

"Colour is integral to my work, and I look forward to sharing with fellow craft lovers how one mad scientist makes it happen!"
